Photo Essay | My Places of Paradise

Everyone has their own version of paradise. Here are some places and things that are paradise to me.

Paradise in Helsinki, Finland.

Paradise often brings up the image of beaches and warm weather, but I like finding paradise wherever I go. I love visiting parks in the middle of cities. This is Suomenlinna Fortress, an island fortress just outside of Helsinki. While this UNESCO world heritage site was pretty busy with tourists when I was there, I didn’t have to go too far to find a quiet and beautiful spot for myself.

Paradise in Madrid, Spain is food.

Paradise in Madrid is food, like this plate of huevos rotos (it’s French fries topped with fried egg and Iberico ham). Yum.

Paradise in New York City is seeing a Broadway musical.

As a theatre nerd whenever I can see a live show (especially if it’s a Tony Award Winning production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch with Neil Patrick Harris in New York City) well, I’m there.

New Orleans, Louisiana is paradise.

New Orleans is paradise. It combined some of my favourite activities eating a lot of delicious food, and then walking around, snapping pictures and taking in the vibe of this unique city.

Paradise in Vancouver, British Columbia.

I live in Alberta, a landlocked province. I’ve come to love any chance to be by the ocean. Here is a photo I took last summer in Vancouver. The views of the mountain and sea here are always fantastic.

Paradise beside Lake Superior, Ontario.

I love going on a road trip and hitting the open road. This photo was taken in Ontario besides Lake Superior when I was on a solo road trip across Canada in 2013.

Paradise in Montreal, Quebec.

Montreal became one of my favourite cities. I loved wandering the streets and taking pictures.

Paradise in Edmonton, Alberta.

Paradise in my hometown of Edmonton, Canada. A beautiful view of the North Saskatchewan River Valley from the Hotel MacDonald.

What does paradise mean to you?

  1. oh wow! i liked this post very much. never read anything like it! what is paradise to me? hmmmmm, not sure I have ever really given it a thought. i would have to say that for me, the closest thing to paradise was staying in my gorgeous hotel overlooking the Aegean Sea in Santorini, vacationing at the Reynold’s Plantation in Georgia with the infinity pool overlooking the amazing mountains, sunbathing in Jackson Hole at the 4 seasons with snow covered mountains all around me, and eating red beans & rice and all the other wonderful local treats in New Orleans. 😉

  2. My idea of paradise is like a lot peoples, a place or state of happiness. Maybe a beach with a soft breeze, a little tropical Latin music, a cold drink and great people to share it with. Probably because it is associated with vacations from work. Being from Calgary I did have to giggle when mentioned Edmonton. 😉

  3. hmmm, what does paradise mean for me? That’s such a hard question! There are lots of things I really enjoy doing. Getting lost in a book and enjoying a cappuccino in a Greek coffee shop. Feeling the sun on my skin on a Beach in Montenegro. Enjoying a Carlsberg beer in Copenhagen. Sometimes, just sitting on the couch with my loved ones. There are so many things and Paradise is in every single one! (this sounds so cheesy!)

  4. What a good idea to add more of your own favorites for Travel Photo Roulette on your own site! I may steal it for future themes, if you don’t mind… Judging by your paradise photos, we have very similar tastes, though my list would have to include chocolate!

  5. A lot of great shots with a lot of different meanings to the word “paradise”. I have to side with New Orleans though. That’s my idea of paradise too!

  6. I hear you about the food!! Paradise for me is a great little cafe, the perfect latte, and some tasty local baked goods. And the best part is that I can find it all over the world!
